Checkerboard Triple Weave Stitch
Checkerboard Triple Weave Stitch combines three simple textures: Stockinette, Seed, and Reverse Stockinette. Together, they form a visually intriguing interwoven checkerboard design that feels smooth in some blocks and bumpy in others. It creates a reversible fabric that looks the same on both sides.
This pattern is uses the easy techniques of just knit and purl with a balanced woven illusion. If you can knit and purl, you can master this 14-row repeat. Get your printable written pattern instructions both flat and in the round, along with knitting chart below.

Why You’ll Love This Stitch
- Skill level: Beginner. If you can knit and purl, you already have every skill required.
- Row repeat: 14 rows. Work through one full set, then repeat it for as long as you need.
- Stitch multiple: Cast on any multiple of 10 stitches, then add 5 more to balance the edges.
- Techniques: Knit and purl only. No increases, decreases, or special stitches.
- Reversible: Yes. The texture is identical on both sides, so there is no “wrong” side.
- Ideal projects: Scarves that never need flipping and blankets that look polished from every angle.

About the Checkerboard Triple Weave Stitch
This Checkerboard Triple Weave Stitch combines three vintage stitch textures into a modern interwoven pattern. The smooth Stockinette and the bumpy Seed Stitches alternate on the first half of the stitch pattern. The second half alternates Seed with the Reverse Stockinette Stitch. As a result, the pattern is replicated on the wrong side of the work for a reversible design.
Is this a reversible pattern?
Yes, the Checkerboard Triple Weave Stitch is a reversible pattern, meaning that both sides of your work, the Right and Wrong sides, are identical. This makes a great choice for items like scarves, dishcloths, and blankets since both sides are similar.

Does the Checkerboard Triple Weave Stitch curl or lay flat?
The curling happens with the Stockinette Stitch blocks on the side edges. This push and pull of knits and purls creates tension in your fabric causing it to warp.
Blocking your piece helps the sides to lay flat. Adding a border is another way to help it lay flat. My favorite border stitches are Garter and Seed stitches.
Both adding a border and blocking your piece helps it lay flat the best!
Can this stitch be knit in the round on circular needles?
Yes, this pattern includes written instructions to knit it in the round which is actually identical to the flat directions. Try it out with either circular or double-pointed needles.
