Swift Stitch Knitting Pattern for Beginners
The Swift Stitch Knitting Pattern is an easy, reversible stitch that creates elongated vertical lines with a 6-row repeat of alternating ribbing. With a simple series of knits and purls, this pattern forms a fabric that looks the same on both sides and lays flat, making it a great choice for scarves, cowls, and blankets.
This texture was the foundation for my popular scarf pattern, which was inspired by a Taylor Swift music video. I really enjoy how quickly this stitch swiftly comes together, and think you’ll have fun trying it out with the written instructions and knitting chart below.

About the Swift Stitch
Easy-to-Memorize
This pattern is easy to memorize because this is an easy repeat of knits and purls. It’s a great choice when you do not want to refer to the written pattern.
Does this texture curl or lay flat?
The mix of knit and purl stitches in each row allows the fabric to easily lay flat. Blocking to size may be done if desired, but the stitch pattern already prevents curling.
Is this a reversible pattern?
Yes, the Swift Stitch is a reversible pattern, meaning that both sides of your work, the Right and Wrong sides, are identical. This makes a great choice for items like scarves, dishcloths, and blankets since both sides are similar.
Can this stitch be knit in the round on circular needles?
Yes, this pattern includes written instructions to knit it in the round. Try it out with either circular or double-pointed needles.
Changing Yarn Colors
If you wish to avoid purl dash lines on the right side of your work, I recommend adding one row of the knit stitch in the new yarn color. When knitting flat, continue pattern instructions for row two. Or if you are knitting in the round, continue pattern with round one.
Swift Stitch Knitting Projects
The inspiration for the Swift Stitch Knitting Pattern came from my design of a replica of Taylor Swift’s iconic scarf from the All Too Well music video. That project became my All Too Well Scarf Knitting Pattern, a full-sized adult scarf in deep burgundy that is easy to knit, reversible, and finished with playful fringe tassels.
You may also like knitting the matching Swift Stitch Hat, which makes a great companion project to the scarf. It’s a great choice for comfortable elasticity, making it perfect for projects that require a bit of stretch.
