Seeded Rib Stitch Knitting Pattern

The Seeded Rib Stitch Pattern creates thick, textured rows. This is an easy-level project created with a simple combination of knits and purls. It is stretchy but firmly holds its shape with the seed stitches between the rows of ribbing.

Knitting Instructions

Flat on Straight Needles

Cast On: Multiples of 4, plus 3

Casting on your stitches in multiples of four. Then add three additional stitches.

  1. Row 1 (Right Side): * K3, P1 *, K3
You are knitting three stitches and purling one stitch. Repeat this pattern all the way down the row to the last three stitches, then knit three.
  2. Row 2 (Wrong Side): K1, P1, K1, * K2, P1, K1 *
Begin this row by knitting one stitch, purling one stitch, then knitting one stitch. Now you will repeat the pattern between the asterisks to the end of the row: Knit two, purl one, and knit one.

Continue this 2-row repeat pattern until you have reached the length you desire.

Right and Wrong Sides of Seeded Rib Stitch Pattern

Cast On and Cast Off

When beginning and ending Rib Stitch Patterns, you may wish to do so “in pattern.” This creates the ribbed texture along the edge for knitted items like sleeves and necks, rather than a solid horizontal edge.

Casting On: Alternating the Long-Tail Cast On Knitwise and Cast On Purlwise stitches in pattern to begin your project.

Casting Off: Alternating the Basic Cast Off Knitwise and Cast Off Purlwise gives the finished edge the same texture as your ribbing.

Seeded Rib Stitch Knitting Projects

Hot Frosty Scarf: Enjoy my replica of the iconic scarf from the beloved romantic holiday season movie Hot Frosty. I was instantly drawn to the scarf’s role in the story—an enchanted piece that symbolizes love and second chances. Its cozy, textured design was too charming to resist, so I decided to recreate it. Knitting this vibrant red scarf is a festive way to bring a touch of movie magic into your holiday season, and I’m thrilled to share this pattern with you!

Swift’s 87 Beanie: My pattern replicates the hat she wore cheering on Travis Kelce at his football game. I know Swiftie Knitters would love to make their own, so I put this design at the top of my list for you. Whether you wear it proudly or give it as a thoughtful gift, this iconic beanie, knitted in the round on circular needles, will be a favorite for years.
