The classic stockinette stitch always curls up, right? But this double knitting technique allows your work to naturally lay flat with a 2-Row Repeat Knit Stitch Pattern. It’s also much thicker so it’s nice and squishy.

Double Stockinette Stitch Knitting Instructions
Knitted Flat on Straight Needles
Cast On Stitches in Multiples of 2: Cast on your stitches in multiples of two stitches for the desired width of your knitted work.
On the first row, knit the first stitch, then bring the yarn in front and slip one stitch off your needle purlwise. Bring your yarn to the back of the work and repeat this pattern between the * * asterisks.
- Row 1: * K1, Sl1P WYIF *
- Row 2: * K1, Sl1 WYIF *
Knit a repeat of rows 1 – 2 until your piece is the length you desire.
Bind off either in-pattern with my Cast Off Purlwise for Ribbing technique or just with the basic Cast Off.
Knitted in the Round on Circular Needles
You may also knit this pattern easily on Circular Needles with just a slight variation in the row repeats.
Cast On Stitches in Multiples of 2: Cast on your stitches in multiples of two stitches for the desired circumference of your knitted work.
- Row 1: * K1, Sl1 WYIF *
- Row 2: * Sl1 WYIB, P1 *
On the first row, knit the first stitch, then bring the yarn in front and slip one stitch off your needle purlwise. Bring your yarn to the back of the work and repeat this pattern between the * * asterisks.
Then on your second row, begin by slipping one stitch off purlwise with your yarn in the back. Bring your yarn to the front of your work and purl the next stitch repeating this two-stitch pattern between the * * asterisks.
Knit a repeat of rows 1 – 2 until your piece is the length you desire.
Again, bind off either in-pattern or with the basic technique.

Yes, the Double Stockinette Stitch is a reversible pattern, meaning that both sides of your work, the Right and Wrong sides, are identical.
Because this stitch alternates knit and slip stitches on all rows, it easily lays flat. You may wish to block your work, however it is not necessary since the fabric does not curl up.
This makes a great choice for items like scarves, dishcloths, and blankets since both sides are similar.
