Today we are knitting up one of my favorite knit stitches, the Swirly Square!
I first saw this stitch in the Great American Afghan. Then I saw a blanket on Ravelry and I was in love!
The pattern is so fun, whimsical, and modern. I love it’s texture, curving seams and the entire graphic look of the Swirly Square! Plus, it’s really fun to knit!
We knit in the round, starting from the very center, and continue knitting round and round, in alternating Knit and Purl increase rows.
You can get really creative with your swirly square. We can either knit it all in one color, switch up our colors, make a square for a blanket or dishcloth, or keep going for a baby blanket or afghan, like this one I knit up for myself… because I’m knit worthy, too!
We will be using 5 double pointed Knitting Needles– I’m using size 7 US. And then we will be switching to circular needles once our piece gets larger.
Worsted or Aran Weighted Yarn, in any fiber of your choice
Double Pointed Knitting Needles – I used Size 7US
Scissors and a Tapestry Needle
CO 8 Stitches + Divide evenly among 4 Double Pointed Needles.
Rows 1 – 4: * Knit, KFB last stitch on each needle *
Rows 5 – 8: * Purl, Purl Increase last stitch on each needle * Repeat these 8 rows until your piece is the size you desire.
Switch to increasingly longer circular needles as you continue knitting.
To finish your work, create 4 rows of Garter Stitch. When knitting in the round, it is in alternating Knit and Purl Rows. On each row, at the end of each needle, create 2 increase stitches.
Bind Off and you are Done!
